Program FAQ’s
1. Are your activities during the week or just on weekends?
Currently, our programs are on weekends only – Saturdays and Sundays.
2. Where are you located?
MORIAH does not have a specific location. We host activities at different venues throughout the central Phoenix area.
3. Do you have different times and days for each activity?
Our programs are usually two hours and dates/times depend on the availability of the venue we are visiting. Usually our programs are held either from 10:00 to noon or 1:00 – 3:00 on a Saturday or a Sunday. MORIAH, at present, is a small non-profit organization, so we are able to offer one program a month (sometimes two). Our programs are entirely funded by the kindness and generosity of those who believe in our mission.
4. Is there a sign up fee?
One of the best parts about MORIAH is that our programs are free! Our programs are entirely funded by the kindness and generosity of those who believe in our mission. We want all families to have access to these vital inclusive social groups. We do respectfully request, however, that if you are unable to attend the event, that you let us know, as we have many families and children who are on our waitlist for each event and would like to participate, should an opening become available.
5. Are siblings welcome to attend?
Yes. While we strive to host events that are available to the whole family, there are sometimes programs that have size and space constraints, where siblings may not be able to attend. Siblings, depending on the age, may participate in the program or may choose to serve as a volunteer peer mentor. Sibling attendance is also free of charge. We want our programs to be family friendly.
6. Do parents/guardians/assistants need to be present?
Yes. At least one parent/guardian/assistant needs to be present at the event.
7. How does the program work?
In a nutshell, we create organized inclusive social group activities where we pair up your child with a neurotypical peer mentor volunteer. Sometimes this is a one to one pairing, usually based on age and gender, and sometimes your child will be with a group of participants and peer mentor volunteers. For younger children, we may pair a child with an older peer mentor volunteer to help model social and communication skills and to look out for them. For older children, we pair them with a peer mentor volunteer closer to their age. Depending on who registers, your child may have the same peer mentor volunteer at different events or may have a different peer volunteer at each event. Either way, it gives your child an opportunity to engage with their peers and practice social and communication skills in a general setting. In addition, we have a group social interventionist present, who may help facilitate engagement between your child and the peer mentor volunteer.
8. What activities do you do?
At MORIAH, we strive to offer a variety of activities over the academic school year. Examples of activities include: bowling, hiking, gardening, arts and crafts, rock climbing and roller skating. This helps allow your child to try out new activities in a structured environment.
9. How do I register for programs?
Our programs are posted online one month before they occur. The best way to find out about our programs is to be registered in our database, and we will send emails regarding our upcoming programs. You may register to request being included in our database at https://www.moriahus.org/us/contact-us/. Once you know about our program, you may register for our programs at events.moriahus.org . As our programs are free of charge, they do fill up quickly. If we are sold out, you will be placed on a waitlist and we will contact you if an opening does become available.
10. What happens if I miss an event or am sick?
If you are unable to attend an event, we ask you to notify us as soon as possible via email (attendance@moriahus.org) or phone call (480) 779-9011). If you miss two events during our program cycle, without providing 24 hour notice, a family will be unable to participate in the remainder of inclusive social events for the remainder of MORIAH’s program cycle for that year (our program cycle runs August – May). This will be true even if you are able to register for an upcoming event.
11. What are the roles and responsibilities of the parents/guardians?
While we encourage parents/guardians to let their child be as independent as possible with the guidance of our peer mentors and MORIAH staff/interventionists, parents/guardians have a vital role to play in our social groups. Parents/guardians must ensure their child’s safety, intervene in unsafe behaviors, and manage any allergies. Please supervise your child to ensure their well-being and participation throughout the program. We appreciate your informing us about allergies, medical conditions or special requirements your child may have. Parents are responsible for administering medications and individual medical or health care needs. Please stay updated on program activities, guidelines, changes, important information and announcements from staff.
12. Do you have a social media presence?
Yes! We post our upcoming events and event photos regularly. Click the icons to follow us at:
